A few weeks ago I went to Alicante for a long weekend. It was my first time in the Valencian region and I could easily notice lots of differences between this region and Andalusia. There are plenty of distinct characteristics between both regions and of course the language is one of them.

Even though I can speak and understand Spanish it was a bit difficult to me to read some words. In the Valencian Region there are two official languages: Spanish and Valencian. The latter is a derivative of Catalan and it’s hard for me to understand. It’s not so difficult to speak to people (because they all speak Spanish – at least with tourists) but often official information is written in Valencian, so the signs in the street were a bit different than what I am used to.

The Beach

In general, Alicante is a pleasant city and the weather is amazing even during winter. When I went there the daytime temperature was around 18°C but unfortunately that isn’t enough for me to spend the day on the beach. It is a great destination for vacations because of its beautiful city beach with a magnificent view to the medieval castle of Santa Barbara. It is really impressive. There are several restaurants in the front promenade along the beach. They serve good fish and seafood and with affordable prices.

THE CITY

Nightlife

The nightlife has a great atmosphere which I didn’t expect. There are lots of bars, restaurants and cafes with terraces full of people (mostly young people). Luckily I went there in a low season so the center of the city and mainly the old town wasn’t so crowded. Alicante is a very popular destination because of its reasonable prices compared to other coastal cities in Southern Spain.

Shopping

There aren’t so many interesting shops – particularly fashion/clothing stores in the city. Although I wasn’t looking for any shop in particular, I just realised this while I was walking around. I couldn’t see many of the shopping brand stores that I am used to find in almost all the main cities in Europe. I can say the same about other types of shops – for ex. design, home decoration or even good souvenir shops – I ended buying my souvenir in the airport. That is ok for me and I can perfectly deal with it during my holidays, as it is not so important to me. But if you absolutely need to shop or like to shop during your trips, just don’t expect this it is the best place for it. There isn’t any major shopping center in the city center. There was one in the past by the harbour but nowadays it is practically a ghost, where you can only find a big blockbuster movie theatre and closed stores all around.

Children Friendly

The city is very child-friendly and you can notice that at first sight. There are lots of playgrounds all around the city. One of the main pedestrian streets (Carrier San Francisco) is literally a walking playground filled with cartoon characters/animals, slides and littles houses for the children to play.  It looks like a fairy tale happening along the narrow street. Big Mr. mushrooms are the main characters there.

CENTRAL MARKET

The central market of the city is a nice spot to visit. The building is well preserved and it still is a mandatory stop for the locals and even for visitors to buy fish, meet or fruit. It is also an attraction for tourists because of its colours and scent of the fresh products.

CASCO ANTIGUO DE SANTA CRUZ

While my boyfriend and me were exploring the city, as we love to do, we discovered its most beautiful part: Casco Antiguo de Santa Cruz which is the oldest part of the city.

It is a colorful neighbourhood filled with flowers and plants everywhere – in every corner and every wall. It is surprisingly wonderful and like a hidden treasure (how I love to name my favourite parts of a place in that way).

This area is so different compared to the rest of the city that it seems we are in another place. Going up through narrow and cobbled streets and secret corners we end up climbing in the direction of the Castle of Santa Barbara. At the end of the Casco Antiguo we have a wonderful view with the castle on top. The clear blue sky surrounding castle above is a like visit card to continue climbing until the castle, which is super easy to do.

Words, flowers and beautiful doors

There are several messages hidden on the walls in the Casco Antiguo de Santa Cruz. Some of them are really subtle so you have to pay attention to find them.

The flowers and flower pots are a main feature in this old part of the city. I can barely remember any little corner without any.

Just like the words and messages present on the walls and flowers all over, the beautiful facades and entrances and doors of the houses are another wonderful attraction in this neighbourhood.

SANTA BARBARA CASTLE

After a long pleasant walk up-hill towards the Castle we found a huge spot forgotten by the time. Even though the castle is perfectly clean and preserved I felt it was just an ample and empty ancient fortress with no joy or activities. The terrace on the top is even more deserted and soulless but the beautiful way until there and the view to the beach makes it worth the hike. It is possible to take an elevator to go down directly until the city center – just next to the beach.

TIPS TO EAT

Tapas: D’Tablas – this bar has a unique and spectacular way of serving its tapas and beer – and it is super cheap. In this place every time you ask for a beer you are seduced by the several tapas of the house as the waiter brings them over in a large tray. You can choose one or more of them – each tapa is served in a small wooden board – you just take it from the tray and after eating you keep the boards on the table(you can create a tower if you want :). In the end the waiter just counts the number of wooden boards and glasses of beer to make the bill.

Lunch: Bululú – this is a actually Venezuelan restaurant which would maybe not be your first choice in Spain but the food is so good that you cannot miss this place.

Dinner: Villaheimy – Impossible to be in a Valencian region and not to try paella. It was delicious! They also have a great selection of wines. I suggest a white one from the region.

Há algumas semanas atrás viajei até Alicante pela primeira vez, para passar um longo fim de semana. Foi a minha primeira vez na região de Valência e encontrei muitas diferenças entre aquela zona e Andalusia – que até agora é a minha parte favorita de Espanha. Entre muitas características diferentes que achei relevantes ao comparar as duas regiões, a língua é uma delas.

Embora eu consiga falar e entender Espanhol, estranho para mim ler algumas coisas. Eles têm duas línguas oficiais: espanhol e valenciano, que é derivado do catalão, que para mim é difícil de entender. Não é difícil falar com as pessoas em Alicante (porque elas falam um espanhol muito compreensível – pelo menos com os turistas), mas eles escrevem em catalão, e coisas como placas com o nome das ruas ou placas de localizacões, são diferentes.

A praia

Em geral, Alicante é uma cidade agradável e o clima é maravilhoso mesmo durante o inverno. Estavam 18 ° C, mas infelizmente não é, de todo, suficiente para eu ir à praia. É um óptimo destino de férias pela sua bela praia com uma vista magnífica para o castelo medieval de Santa Bárbara. Existem por ali vários restaurantes ao longo da rua em frente à praia. Servem bom peixe e marisco a preços muito aceitáveis.

A CIDADE

Vida nocturna

A vida noturna tem uma óptima atmosfera, há muitos bares, restaurantes e cafés com esplanadas cheias de gente muito animada (principalmente jovens). Alicante é um destino muito popular por causa dos seus preços bastante razoáveis ​​em comparação com outras cidades de praia no sul de Espanha.

Compras

Fiquei perplexa com a falta de lojas na cidade, principalmente lojas de roupa. Embora eu não estivesse à procura de nenhuma loja em particular, apercebi-me da escassez de montras a que estou habituada a ver, enquanto estava andava pelas ruas. Não existiam lojas da maioria das marcas que costumo encontrar na maioria das cidades da Europa. Tudo bem por mim, consigo lidar perfeitamente com isso durante as férias, não me é assim tão importante. Mas ainda assim foi algo de estranho. Por isso, para quem é fã de compras durante as viagens, tirem o cavalinho da chuva, porque este não é o melhor lugar para fazê-lo. Não existe sequer um centro comercial (além do fraquinho El Corte Ingles, que até esse é pobrezito) – apesar de ter existido um centro comercial no passado, hoje em dia o edifício acabou de se transformar num local de cinema comum, que foi a única coisa que se manteve. Há ali lojas fechadas por todos os lados. Posso dizer o mesmo sobre outro tipo de lojas como decoração de casa ou até mesmo uma boa lojinha para comprar um bonito souvenir – nah, acabei por comprar o meu no aeroporto.

Parques Infantis

Posso dizer que a cidade é muito “amiga” das crianças e isso é detectável à primeira vista. Há muitos parques infantis por todo o lado. Existe até uma rua enorme no meio da cidade com figuras de animais ao longo da rua, escorregas e casinhas. Há dezenas de senhores cogumelos.

MERCADO CENTRAL

O mercado da cidade é também um bom local para visitar. O edifício está muito bem preservado e é uma paragem obrigatória para os habitantes locais, para comprar peixe fresco, carne ou fruta. É também uma atração para os turistas pelas suas cores e cheiros.

CASCO ANTIGUO DE SANTA CRUZ

Enquanto eu e o meu namorado explorávamos a cidade – como adoramos fazer, descobrimos a parte mais bonita ao acaso. O Casco Antiguo de Santa Cruz é uma parte antiga da cidade.

É um bairro colorido cheio de flores e plantas por todo o lado. É como um tesouro escondido (como eu adoro chamar às minhas partes favoritas das cidades).

Toda a zona é completamente diferente do resto da cidade. Com ruas estreitas e antigas, subindo, vamos em direção ao Castelo de Santa Bárbara. No final do Casco Antiguo temos uma vista maravilhosa para o castelo. O céu azul e um castelo lá em cima é um cartão de visita para continuar a subir até o topo, o que é super fácil de fazer.

Palavras, flores e portas bonitas

• Existem várias mensagens escondidas nas paredes do Casco Antiguo de Santa Cruz. Algumas deles são mesmo discretas, há que prestar atenção para encontrá-las.
• As flores são a característica principal nesta parte antiga da cidade. Mal consigo lembrar-me de um cantinho sem nenhum vaso com flores ou plantas pelo chão.
• Assim como as mensagens exibidas nas paredes e a enorme quantidade de flores, as fachadas e as portas das casas são outra atração maravilhosa do bairro.

CASTELO DE SANTA BARBARA

Depois de uma longa caminhada a subir em direção ao castelo, encontrámos lá em cima um enorme lugar esquecido. Considero-o assim, porque embora tudo estivesse perfeitamente limpo e preservado, senti que estava ali apenas um enorme castelo antigo vazio – de alegria ou algumas actividades mais atractivas para os visitantes. O topo do castelo é ainda mais pobre de vida (embora tenha muita gente a tirar fotografias). No entanto, todo o caminho até chegar lá e a vista lá de cima sobre a praia faz valer a pena. É possível apanhar um elevador para descer directamente até o centro da cidade – perto da praia.

DICAS PARA COMER

Para Tapear: D’Tablas – esta é uma maneira espetacular de comer tapas e beber cerveja da maneira mais barata de sempre. Neste lugar, sempre que pedimos uma cerveja, vamos ser seduzidos por várias tapas num tabuleiro, trazidas pelo empregado de mesa. Basta escolhermos uma ou várias e aproveitar – as tapas são servidas em pequenas bases de madeira só é preciso mantê-las em cima da mesa (até se pode criar uma torre se quisermos :). No final, basta contabilizar a quantidade de bases de madeira e copos de cerveja para pagar a conta.

Almoço: Bululú – embora seja um restaurante venezuelano, a comida é tão boa que não dá para ignorar este restaurante.

Jantar: Villaheimy – Impossível estar numa região valenciana e não comer uma paella. Estava deliciosa! Eles também têm uma excelente selecção de vinhos – sugiro um branco da região para acompanhar a paella.
