To a bunch of people in the world the name Shirley makes them think about Shirley Temple. Not to me. By pronouncing the name Shirley I am automatically breathing the colours oh Shirley Kurata. She is my Shirley.

It was while I was drowning  in some article about Lena Dunham that I read her name for the first time. Shirley is Lena’s stylist and there was attached an image of her, full of colours.  I started searching about Kurata in that right moment and it took me hours. I was deeply in love.  Totally steeped in inspiration. She became inevitably one of my great icons and sources of inspiration.

Shirley Kurata is a Japanese stylist living in LA. Her adorable round face always wearing different amazing glasses resembles me a cutie cartoon character in a shape of a real person. Her work is full of bright colours, graphic patterns and a mix of vintage and contemporary style. Her looks are a magical resemble of 60’s and 70’s. And so her house is all about that. Some of my favourite Shirley’s works were made aside her friend and director Autumn Wilde who is also a photographer. Most of the pictures of this post are by Autumn who created the website Daily Shirley with photos she has taken of the stylist. They collaborate often. Their works include ad commercials and music videos.

Para muitas pessoas o nome Shirley faz com que se lembrem da Shirley Temple. Para mim não. Ao pronunciar o nome Shirley estou automaticamente já a respirar as cores de Shirley Kurata. Ela é a minha Shirley.

Foi enquanto mergulhava num artigo sobre a Lena Dunham que eu vi o seu nome pela primeira vez. Shirley é estilista de Lena e no artigo que lia, estava uma imagem dela anexada, cheia de cores. Comecei a pesquisar sobre Kurata logo naquele momento e levei horas. Porque estava profundamente apaixonada. Completamente afundada em inspiração. Tornou-se desde aí um dos meus grandes ícones e fonte de inspiração.

Shirley Kurata é uma estilista japonesa que vive em Los Angeles. A sua cara redonda adorável sempre vestida com óculos irreverentes, lembra-me-me uma personagem muito querida de desenho animado, na forma de uma pessoa real. O seu trabalho é cheio de cores fortes, padrões e uma mistura de estilo vintage e contemporâneo. Os seus looks mágicos lembram os anos 60 e 70. Tal como a sua casa.
