While I was reading the book “Tears of the Giraffe” by the Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith – which I bought totally randomly in a second-hand book shop in Copenhagen – I completely fell in love with it page after page. I cannot describe how delighted I felt regarding firstly to the theme of the book – detectives; and secondly because it is a story that occurred in Africa – in Botswana.

To me (and I guess to everybody) Africa means heat and colours. Colorful patterns in clothes; smiles and beautiful green trees almost everywhere. It was like I was dreaming and sinking in a good way into those bunch of stories.

Alexander McCall Smith wrote a serie of books – there are 17 now and I want to read them all! The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency was the first one. It is about a woman who opens her own detective agency in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, in southern Africa. The stories are about peculiar cases that she and her secretary solved.

After a research about the novel, I discovered that it was adapted for the screen. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, aired in 2007. Directed by Anthony Minghella, the series of seven episodes for television (pilot episode of 2 parts included) was made by the BBC, HBO and other companies of production. Starred by Jill Scott as Precious Ramotswe and Anika Noni Rose as secretary Grace Makuts, this is a great TV Serie full of comedy, drama, good feeling, colours and smiles.

Enquanto lia o livro “Tears of the Giraffe” do autor escocês Alexander McCall Smith – livro que comprei total e aleatoriamente numa loja de livros em segunda mão no centro de Copenhaga – apaixonava-me por ele página após página.
