Nadine Labaki is a Lebanese actress, writer and director. Far beyond her beauty she is one of the most well-known filmmakers in the Arab cinema industry.

SUKKAR BANAT

(aka Caramel) is a Franco-Lebanese film and the first one performed by Nadine Labaki. It was released on March 20, 2007 at the Cannes Film Festival.

It tells the story of five Lebanese women who deal with issues like the forbidden love, traditions, repressed sexuality and the struggle to accept the natural process of being adult woman. This is about “duty Vs. desire”. The title Caramel refers to the most used method of hair removal in your country that is effect with homemade caramel (sugar, water and lemon juice). Presenting an idea of sweet and salty / bitter, it shows us that everyday relationships can sometimes be painful. But happily there is the shared brotherhood between the central female characters which always prevails. Impossible not to fall in love with the Nadine Labaki’s intense movies.

Synopsis:

Caramel revolves around the intersecting lives of five Lebanese women. Layale (Nadine Labaki) works in a beauty salon in Beirut along with two other women. Each one has a problem: Layale is stuck in a dead-end relationship with a married man; Nisrine is no longer a virgin but is set to be married, and in her conservative family pre-marital sex is not accepted; Rima is attracted to women; Jamale is a regular customer and wannabe actress, is worried about getting old; Rose, is a tailoress with a shop next to the salon, is an old woman who had devoted her life to taking care of her mentally unbalanced elder sister Lili, but has found her first love. The film does not refer to any of the political problems or recent warfare that has troubled Lebanon. Rather, Labaki’s tale paints everyday people with everyday problems.

ET MAINTENANT ON VA OÙ?

(aka Where Do We Go Now?) This is the second film directed by Nadine Labaki. It was released on 2011.

In a place in Lebanon, Muslims and Catholics live in a small village, whose only link to the outside world is an old bridge, surrounded by ancient land mines, making access to the city very risky. The TV signal is very weak, which means that the inhabitants do not have much news about what happens in the world. Although the village is religiously divided, it lives in peace. Until one day, when the men of the community begin to argue among themselves. It is from there that women take action, looking for ways to keep them occupied avoiding conflicts.

In order to prevent their husbands from facing and killing in a place that, the women create every kind of strategy. Although that place was marked by war, it still remained quiet. To distract al the men, they will challenge taboos, hire a group of Ukrainian dancers to visit the place to curse their men and serve cannabis biscuits at a party.

But when a tragic death occurs, they will be forced to adopt a much more radical tactic. Another great achievement from my dear Nadine Labaki.

Trata a história de cinco mulheres libanesas que lidam com questões como amor proibido, tradições, sexualidade reprimida, a luta para aceitar o processo natural da idade. O dever vs desejo. O título Caramel refere-se ao método de depilação mais utilizado no seu país que é efeito com caramelo caseiro (açúcar, água e sumo de limão). Apresentando uma idéia de doce e de salgado/amargo, mostra que as relações cotidianas às vezes podem ser dolorosas, mas no final a irmandade compartilhada entre as personagens centrais femininas prevalece. Impossível não adorar os filmes de Nadine Labaki.

Sinopse:

Layal (Nadine Labaki) é proprietária de um salão de beleza em Beirute, onde trabalham mais duas empregadas/amigas. Cada uma das personagens principais sofre de um problema. Layal tem um relacionamento com um homem casado; Nisrine (Yasmine Al Masri), que já não é virgem, vai casar-se brevemente; Rima (Joanna Moukarzel) sente-se atraída por mulheres; Jamale (Gisèle Aouad), uma cliente assídua, vive preocupada com o envelhecimento; Rose (Sihame Haddad), uma costureira cuja loja se localiza ao lado do salão, é uma velha senhora que dedica a sua vida a cuidar da irmã mais velha – Lili (Aziza Semaan) que é demente – enquanto vive o primeiro amor.

ET MAINTENANT ON VA OÙ?
Numa vila do Líbano, muçulmanos e católicos vivem numa pequena aldeia, cujo único elo de ligação com o mundo exterior é uma velha ponte, cercada por antigas minas terrestres, tornando o acesso à cidade muito arriscado. O sinal de TV é muito fraco, o que faz com que os habitantes não tenham muitas notícias sobre o que acontece no mundo. Apesar da aldeia estar dividida religiosamente, vive em paz. Até um dia, em que os homens da comunidade começam a discutir entre si. É a partir daí que as mulheres entram em acção, procurando meios para mantê-los ocupados, de forma a não entrarem em grandes conflitos.

Elas inventam todo tipo de estratégia para impedir que os seus maridos se enfrentem e gerem mortos num lugar que, embora marcado pela guerra, permanece ainda pacato. Para distrair os homens, elas vão desafiar tabus, contratando um grupo de dançarinas ucranianas para visitar o lugar para enreterem os seus homens e servem biscoitos de cannabis numa festa.

Mas quando uma morte trágica acontece, elas serão obrigadas a adotar uma tática bem mais radical. Outra excelente realização da minha querida Nadine Labaki.
